Chennai roads to have granite pavements

May 2, 2013

Chennai Corporation began work on building new granite pavements along police commissioner road in Egmore. The pavements will be built across 71 roads and will come up to a total length of around 48 km, according to corporation officials.

These new granite pavements are individually designed to suit a specific road and be disabled-friendly. This is the first time pavements have been designed by an architect for the civic body. The project has been launched with ‘Chennai City Connect’, an NGO that deals with transport and urban planning, as the monitoring agency has more than 15 architects from the city on the design board. The architects are volunteering for the project, till the civic body recruits their own design staff.
