Exports of Italy’s natural stone grow by 6.3% in the Middle East

The Gulf Area is increasingly strategic for Italian exports of marble and granite, processed and semi-processed products. Infrastructural development in Qatar has boosted imports from Italy from €15.7 million in 2012 to 45.6 millions in 2013. Marmomacc, in collaboration with Confindustria Marmomacchine, is currently heading a group of 13 companies in the Emirate seeking new markets and business opportunities.

QatarWith a positive performance even in the first month of the year, thanks to €13.3 million of turnover in January 2013 (+6.3%), the Middle East is a prime destination for Italian marble and granite exports. Gulf markets in 2013 imported stone materials, semi-finished and finished products ‘Made in Italy’ worth €242 million, an increase of 13.7% compared to 213 million in the previous year.

In this region, Qatar stands out in particular, where Italian exports of natural stone increased by €15.7 Million in 2012 to 45.6 millions in 2013. The country is experiencing strong urban development in view of the World Cup in 2022: the tiny Emirate is creating, amidst the desert sand, entire cities with skyscrapers, luxury resorts and shopping centres, not to mention a mega-bridge 40 km. long linking Doha with Manama in Bahrain.

The construction sector recently met in Doha for the third edition of Qatar Stone Tech (12-15 May), an international show focusing on stone and processing technologies scheduled within the context of the 11th edition of the Qatar Project, the landmark initiative in the country for infrastructures, planning and construction.

Italy also took part with a group of companies attending under the banner of the Marmomacc brand, the most important international show for natural stone operators held at Veronafiere. The mission, organised by Marmomacc in collaboration with Confindustria Marmomacchine, Bagnara Nikolaus, Breton, De Franceschi Marmi, Mec, La Borghuigiana, MarmiCarrara, Gmm, Colombo & C., Berti Sixto & C. Industria Pietra Serena, P-Porfidi, Innova Stone and Gmc, together with Kamen Pazin from Croatia.

Activities undertaken by Marmomacc (Verona, 24-27 September 2014) to promote business and culture linked with the natural stone world, in fact, are enhanced by an international calendar events featuring not only the Middle East but also the United States, Brazil and North Africa.
